If only a guy asking for your number was simply a case of him being interested in you. Sadly, this isn’t always what’s going on. There are various reasons why a guy would want to get your digits, and knowing what his motivations are can help you figure out the best way to respond and avoid getting your hopes up. Here are 11 reasons he’s asking for your number.
- He felt intense chemistry. If you’ve just met the guy and he’s asking for your number, it could be that he’s feeling the spark just as much as you are, but be careful. Make sure he’s not just trying to get your number for a hook-up. He should at least show you that he’s keen to chat and get to know you before he asks for your digits.
- He wants to have sex tonight. Now, if he hasn’t even said two words to you but he’s hoping to get your number so that he can text you later (even though it’s already after 9 p.m.), he might just want to have sex. He’s not looking for the chance to get to know you better and isn’t really interested in talking, actually. Oh no, here come those horny texts…
- He thought you were interesting. You’ve been chatting to the guy for two hours even though you’ve just met. You guys are clicking and he tells you that he’s interested to know more about you and your life. So, he asks you for your number at the end of the conversation. This is a good sign that he’s clearly interested in getting to spend some more time with you.
- He’s asking you out on a date. Now, he might think you’re intriguing and gorgeous, but does he want a date? If he tells you he’d love to take you out, that’s an obvious sign he’s asking for your digits to set up a date. Other signs that he’d love to go on a date include if he makes lots of eye contact, he spends more time with you than anyone else in the room, and he’s flirted with you to the point where you can safely say he’s interested.
- He wants to be good buddies. Ladies, just because a guy asks you for your number, it doesn’t mean that he’s romantically interested. He might just really enjoy chatting and laughing with you and he’d love to have more of the fun, interesting conversations that you share. You’ll know soon enough if this is his reason for asking for your number by checking out what he does. For example, if he’s only ever interested in texting and never actually hints that he’d like to go out, you’re sliding into the friend zone.
- He’s asking for his friend. If his friends were around earlier and then he had the courage to ask for your number, it might not be for him but for one of his friends who doesn’t have the balls to ask you himself. Of course, if the guy’s decent, he’ll tell you that the number’s for his friend. If you’re not sure who the friend is, don’t give your number! You never know where it’ll end up.
- He felt pressure. Here’s a sticky situation: The guy wasn’t planning on asking for your number, but perhaps you strongly hinted that it would be good to exchange numbers and he felt like he had to go along with it. If he looks a bit tense while asking for your number or suggests taking yours instead, then maybe he’s not actually all that keen on chatting via text.
- He wants to make his girlfriend jealous. If you know the guy’s dating someone, why would you even want to give him your number? He might be hoping to make her jealous. Other signs include if he regularly moans about his girlfriend or gives you a ton of attention when she’s around. Awkward and creepy. Stay away from this jerk!
- He wanted to continue the conversation. If he was rushing off and you guys couldn’t finish your interesting conversation, he might’ve asked for your number so you could continue chatting via text. This might not necessarily mean that he’s into you, but he’s clearly interested in chatting to you. Hey, maybe that’s the first step…
- He wants to keep his options open. He might be dating lots of women but he doesn’t want to stick to just one. So, he asks you for your number in the hope that he can get his ego stroked by you (yeah, he noticed how you were staring at his sexy lips). This guy might just text you when he’s bored or horny, though, so you’ve been warned.
- He gives his number to everyone. Then there’s the guy who will give his number to anyone who glances in his direction, so he’s got hundreds of women’s numbers on his phone. Perhaps this makes him feel more confident, or he’s just a friendly guy. If he’s the type to be charming to everyone he meets, then don’t get your hopes up. He’s probably not taking this seriously, and neither should you.
